Made to Progress: Johnathan Turner shifts careers to pursue passions and leave a legacy
February 3, 2025
Earning a college degree always seemed out of reach for Johnathan Turner. After graduating from high school, he dove into the responsibilities of adulthood, focusing on his career and doing what was necessary to pay the bills. Johnathan wanted a more meaningful path. He wanted a career that aligned with his interests and allowed him to leave a lasting legacy for his family.
“I needed to refocus,” Johnathan explained. “My job became too demanding, and without an education, I couldn’t explore new opportunities. I needed to go back to college.”
This realization led him to take a new career direction. He enrolled in online classes at Northeast Lakeview College, a move he described as a “make or break” moment after being out of school for 20 years. The experience felt scary at first but later became an important turning point in his life.

With each successful course, Johnathan gained confidence. He started taking more classes, pushing himself further to realize how online learning with AlamoONLINE at Northeast Lakeview College fit into his life.
“What appealed to me most was the ability to work around my schedule,” Johnathan said. “I didn’t have to be in a specific place at a specific time, and I could focus on my studies when I had the time. That flexibility made going back to school seem possible.”

While flexibility was key, his motivation also came from his children. Johnathan wanted them to witness his college journey and understand the power of perseverance and hard work.
“My children were a huge motivating factor in my journey. I wanted them to see me going through college, to set a good example of resilience.”
Johnathan found support not only from his family but also from his instructors. One professor, in particular, shared the story of her father successfully returning to college later in life, which deeply resonated with him.
It reminded him that no matter your age, it's never too late to change careers and take the next step toward building a future that aligns with your passions.
Johnathan will graduate in 2025 with a fully online associate degree from Northeast Lakeview College. Shortly after, he plans to transfer to UTSA and pursue his bachelor's degree.
“I see this as one of my greatest accomplishments."
"I'm proud of the journey I’ve been on, and with the support of the staff at Alamo Colleges, I’ll be ready to start the next chapter of my career, something that once felt so far away."
